Toy Materials Guide: ABS, Wood, Plush & Silicone
The material decides how a toy feels, lasts and passes safety testing. This guide compares the main toy materials — ABS, wood, plush fabric and silicone — for custom production.
Request a Custom QuoteThe Main Toy Materials
Most custom toys are made from a handful of materials, each with a clear trade-off between feel, cost, durability and safety testing.
| Material | Strengths | Watch-outs | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| ABS plastic | Durable, precise, colorfast, food-grade options | Needs tooling; small-parts grading | Building blocks, figures, electronics housing |
| Wood | Premium, eco feel, durable | Coating limits (lead/migration); splinters | Blocks, puzzles, educational |
| Plush fabric | Soft, huggable, brandable | Flammability; secure eyes/parts for under-3 | Stuffed animals, characters |
| Silicone | Soft, food-grade, chew-safe | Costlier; tooling | Baby/teether toys |
Safety Drives Material Choice
Material choice and the age grade together decide what testing applies — coating limits for wood, flammability and small-parts for plush, battery and EMC for electronics. We help you pick a material that hits your feel, price and the right standard. See the compliance checker.
Common Questions
Which material is safest for baby toys?
For babies, food-grade silicone and untreated or non-toxic-coated wood are common; all must pass small-parts and chemical limits for under-3. We spec material to the age grade and test accordingly.
Do wooden toys have material restrictions?
Yes — coatings must stay within lead and chemical-migration limits, and finishing must be splinter-free. We use non-toxic, water-based coatings and test to EN71/ASTM F963/CPSIA.
Does material choice affect tooling cost?
Yes — molded materials (ABS, silicone) may need tooling; plush and wood are pattern/CNC based. We advise the most cost-effective route for your design and volume.
